Hemorrhoids, also called piles, are swollen, inflamed veins in the anus or lower rectum. While they can be uncomfortable and even painful, they are quite common and can occur for a variety of reasons. Most often, they are caused by excessive straining during bowel movements, but other factors like chronic constipation, diarrhea, pregnancy, and even sitting for long periods can also contribute.
Types of Hemorrhoids
There are two main types:
- Internal – These are located inside the rectum and are typically not visible. They can cause bleeding during bowel movements and may even protrude outside the anus if they become enlarged or prolapsed.
- External – These are located just under the skin around the anus. They tend to be more painful and can cause itching, swelling, and the development of hard lumps around the anal area.
Symptoms of Hemorrhoids
Symptoms can vary depending on the type and severity. Common signs include:
- Bright red blood: You may notice blood in your stool, on toilet paper, or in the toilet bowl after a bowel movement. This is a common sign of internal hemorrhoids.
- Pain and irritation: Hemorrhoids can cause discomfort, particularly when sitting, and you may experience pain or tenderness around the anus, especially with external hemorrhoids.
- Swelling or lumps: You might feel a swelling or hard lump around the anal area, which could be an external hemorrhoid.
- Anal itching: Irritation around the anus is a common symptom of both internal and external hemorrhoids.
While these symptoms are often associated with hemorrhoids, they can sometimes be caused by other health issues. It’s always a good idea to consult your healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis.
