FOCUS GROUP RESULTS

Manage Anal Leakage

Focus group participants opened up about their experiences with common bum-related issues like dealing with excessive sweating and how to manage anal leakage.

Males

Experienced itching and sweating in anal/rectal region, causing significant concern and embarrassment, including fear of having issues in public related to the condition. General causes were attributed to:

  • Physical exertion
  • Hot, humid weather
  • Poor anal tone

Females

Suffered from a gastroenterological disorder such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease, colitis, celiac disease, hemorrhoids or other GI disorder. Episodes were often triggered by:

  • Stress & anxiety
  • Eating certain foods
  • Drinking certain beverages

How did this affect their lives?

Most respondents said the condition had affected their life physically as well as mentally and emotionally. Many have limited their activities, staying home when they are experiencing an episode. They frequently carry a change of clothing with them, and clean the area repeatedly as necessary to address the issue. Avoiding social events and activities became their normal line of defense. General responses to the condition have been:

  • Lack of confidence
  • Choosing to stay at home
  • Going to fewer social events
  • Avoiding physical activities
  • Less active sex life
  • Stopped doing favorite activities
  • Changed the way they dress

Did they seek medical advice?

The sensitive nature of this condition often makes it difficult for people to talk about their symptoms, even with healthcare professionals. Most participants in the study had not sought advice from a doctor. Those who had sought help had typically spoken with a primary care physician, or in a few cases, a GI specialist. However, none of them reported receiving helpful insight or solutions from these doctors. It’s common for people to search for solutions on their own. Many have tried:

  • Cleansing area with body wipes
  • Taking multiple showers per day
  • Applying body powders
  • Using body liners/pads
  • Wearing breathable fabrics or moisture-wicking underwear
  • Avoiding light-colored clothing
  • Using a bidet
